The Chambermaid, by Thomas Rowlandson: 1780
Return
An old lecher (possibly a caricature of Dr. Samuel Johnson) is trying
to persuade a pretty, young chambermaid to join him in bed. The
contorted lines of the old man emphasize his age, in contrast to the
lines of the young chambermaid. The girl responds with disgust. The
disgust is accentuated by the disordered objects in the foreground,
and the interplay of light and dark.
