The Chambermaid Thomas Rowlandson 1780
The Chambermaid, by Thomas Rowlandson: 1780
Return

An old lecher (possibly a caricature of Dr. Samuel Johnson) is trying to persuade a pretty, young chambermaid to join him in bed. The disgust is accentuated by the disordered objects in the foreground, and the interplay of light and dark.
